I'm have Windows Vista Home Premium and have been having this problem for almost a year now. At random times, my internet dies and I get the ';webpage unavailable'; or ';this page cannot be displayed';. However, it shows that I am still connected to the internet. If I'm using AIM, I can still use that but I can't browse the internet anymore. Restarting the computer currently solves the issue, but sometimes I have to restart 3+ times a day, which is pretty ridiculous.
Anybody know how I can solve this?I'm connected to the internet, but I can't browse?
Possible virus attempting to seize control of your browser function. Hard to diagnose from here though. I am not intimately failure with AIM so I'm not sure how it responds to intermittent connection failure. You may try running your virus scanner or scanning the processes tab of the Task Manager for recent unwelcome additions. Alternatively, if the problem is recent, you could run System Restore and select a restore point dated before the problems started.
Try this: Open your start menu and select ';Run'; Type in MSCONFIG and press enter. Select Diagnostic startup and click Apply. Your computer will prompt you to restart, do so. This will eliminate all non-essential processes from the startup procedure. See if the problem persists. If this solves the problem, reopen MSCONFIG and choose ';selective startup';. Select the services tab from the top. Click the box at the bottom to ';Hide all Microsoft services';. Although SOME of the remaining services may be uuseful(display aadaptersshould be left on), most of these are uunnecessary sspecificallyany that have no entry under manufacturer. These may be malicious programs and can be disabled by clicking the box to their left. You can also click the Startup tab at the top and search for malware there, but some ';Unknown'; selections there such as ';CTHelper'; and ';CTxfiHlp'; should be left on. Once you have disabled any suspicious programs, Apply the changes and restart to see if the problem is fixed.
If you only recently installed your modem (cable modem?) you may have a signal problem such as a ';hot'; connection. This occurs sometimes when people have ONLY cable internet (as opposed to internet+TV) and can be easily fixed by contacting your service provider or even adding a cable splitter or two between your modem and the wall. This problem would likely give an error such as ';limited connectivity'; though and is highly unlikely if you have not recently obtained/altered your internet service to that address.
