How can I share a folder between a Laptop with Internet and a Desktop without?

I have a wireless adapter for the desktop but lost the CD.I got on my laptop and downloaded the driver but can not get it to go onto a disk. I was told that file sharing between my computers would be best, but I can not get the shared folder on my laptop. The Desktop runs Windows XP and the Laptop runs Windows 7, I tried connecting them with an Ethernet cable but do not know how to access the shared folder on windows 7How can I share a folder between a Laptop with Internet and a Desktop without?
first of all internet access doesn't have anything to do with File Sharing
